IRELAND ROAD TRIP 2
1st-9th May 2009

A Fantastic week with wind and waves all the way, including the UKWA comp at Brandon Bay.
Here's a quick run-down..

DAY 1:

Saturday. Traveled over with Rich Potter and Mark 'SAV' Salvage. Forecast was fairly average so headed straight to Belmullet to get the full hit of anything out there and scored heavy mast high down the line, sunny and 5m weather!
You really had to race these and throw in the occasional floater to keep up with the section as it was practically a close out. Really good fun to be able to go at them full speed..

DAY 2:

Easky. Smallest day of the week but had some fun 5.6 weather and got out on the Pocket93.

DAY 3:

Magheroarty. 4.5m sails and great fun on the beachy, jumping and riding. Reef a bit mushy due to the strong westerly. Timo and Finn Mullen were up there ripping. Couple of shots of the reef..

DAY 4:

Big Tuesday. Back to Sligo for a cranking mast high plus swell and cross off 4-4.5 weather. Mega.
Forecast is to get bigger and better for the next two days but we have to head to Brandon.

DAY 5:

Headed down to Brandon for contest day 1. Was a real struggle to drive away from the North and the forecast 24ft swell. Event ran at Gowlane, logo high (15ft forecast). Gutted when I was knocked straight out the single!
Think I was finding it hard to adjust to the softer waves.

Luckily they went straight into the double elimination and I fought back through to the top 8, eventually being knocked out by Phil Horrocks (on a mission also fighting his way back from last) and Rob Jones (local ripper)

DAY 6:

Huge swell in Brandon Bay (mast and a half on the sets out back) but you could hardly say it was going off, more like survival conditions with force 9 gusts. They finished the double elimination for the Pro's.
Jamie Hancock won, followed by John Skye, Ben Proffitt, Andy King, Phil Horrocks and Rob Jones.
I finished 8th out of 26 Pro's, which I'm pretty happy with as there was the best turn out for years with lots of full timers and even more who have spent the winter away training.

I never actually got on the water... We went to check Smerwick harbour but the best waves were breaking straight onto a rock and most of the beach breaks around Brandon Bay were just huge mush burgers, so ended up climbing a mountain on the day with the best forecast of the week!! The pics and vid of the Pro's do look highly impressive mind!  In hindsight we should have bailed back to the NW and scored an all time session (which would have been better than Tuesday which was definitely all time!)

Towards the end of the Dingle..

DAY 7:

We weren't about to make the same mistake twice, and bailed to Sligo. The result of the comp was final anyway as there wasn't time to run another double, but they did run an expression session won by Irish prodigy Mike Clancy.

It was 4.5 weather, down the line, yadda yadda, another great day although not quite epic with head high waves (maybe logo high on the sets off the point) but very long rides. Really, really shoulda been here the two days previous...

I had a quick but pretty rubbish surf when the wind went and found out just how strong the rip is..

The Champ!

The lads decided they wanted to head home as the forecast was for the wind to drop, so that's what we did. I could probably have scored a weekend of good surfing but that wouldn't really have been fair.

Image

So all in all, a great week and a good result. Shame we missed an amazing couple of days in the NW but I guess it's not everyday you get a windy/wavy contest..
Can't wait to get back over to Ireland and sail some of the reefs on huge swells, so many reefs and so much potential, love it.

Izzy had a great time as usual..
